Maker Faire Crete 2026 was held for the first time in Heraklion, from April 3–5, bringing the world’s largest festival of creativity to Crete. The event was organized with the support of the Hellenic Educational Robotics Organization (H.E.R.O.), bringing together creators, artists, engineers, designers, programmers, and DIY (Do It Yourself) enthusiasts.
It is an open celebration of innovation and inventiveness, where projects from the fields of educational robotics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), the arts, and technology are showcased. It serves as a dynamic platform for expression, where ideas move beyond the lab and meet the public, encouraging interaction, collaboration, and creativity.
As part of the event, visitors had the opportunity to get to know Argastiri and explore new ways of storytelling, education, and connection with cultural identity, as shaped through the use of augmented reality (AR) technologies.
Augmented reality is a technology that enhances the physical world with digital elements, such as images, sounds, and 3D visualizations, through mobile devices. In this way, an interactive environment is created where the real and digital worlds coexist, offering a new kind of experience.
This approach was reflected in our participation, where a series of interactive experiences combining technology with culture and art were presented.
A key highlight was the “living” children’s book “The Shepherd’s World on the Mountain of Psiloritis”, which uses augmented reality technology through the IDAology application. Through this experiential approach, the book’s characters come to life and narrate the story, transporting children into the daily life and traditions of Psiloritis. Reading thus becomes a multisensory experience that enhances imagination, learning, and connection with cultural heritage.
At the same time, visitors had the opportunity to explore the Adrakτος digital virtual reality (VR) museum, a space where the art of weaving meets contemporary creation through four three-dimensional works by the weavers of Psiloritis. There, tradition is redefined through new forms of artistic expression, highlighting the timeless relationship between past and future.
The experience was completed with the METARTUM augmented reality application, through which the public could discover the mitata (traditional shepherd shelters) of Psiloritis and learn about their history and construction through a digital tour of the mountain.
Participation in Maker Faire Crete 2026 was a unique opportunity for everyone to engage with innovative ideas, new technologies, and imaginative creations. At the same time, it was a valuable experience of dialogue and interaction, through which we connected with creators, exchanged ideas, and were inspired by the originality and creativity of the participants.
