The Greek National Opera Comes to Anogeia

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” wrote Nietzsche, and in our homeland of Anogeia, on the slopes of Psiloritis Mountain, musicality and rhythm remain an essential part of life, continuously evolving and thriving.

With a remarkable series of cultural events, Anogeia is preparing to welcome the Greek National Opera in May 2026, as part of the nationwide program “The GNO Travels Across Greece.”

The country’s leading artistic institution continues its dynamic presence throughout regional Greece, bringing to Anogeia eight unique performances and artistic activities with free admission for the public, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience music, theatre, and lyrical art up close.

Overall, the Greek National Opera’s tour in Crete includes 56 events across 29 different venues in six municipalities of the island: Chania, Rethymno, Anogeia, Heraklion, Sitia, and Ierapetra.

In Anogeia, the program acquires a special character, meeting a place deeply connected to musical tradition, history, and cultural identity.Audiences will enjoy concerts, performances for children, music-theatre productions, tributes to Cretan music, as well as documentary screenings.

The program “The GNO Travels Across Greece” is implemented with the support of a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), aimed at strengthening the artistic outreach of the Greek National Opera.

Below are excerpts from the words of the Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera, Mr. Giorgos Koumendakis, who stated among other things:

“The Greek National Opera’s major tour across Crete carries the symbolic weight of an inner return to the principles and values of the Cretan land.Through the program of 56 unique events that we will present throughout May, in 29 different venues across Chania, Rethymno, Anogeia, Heraklion, Sitia, and Ierapetra, we attempt to create an amalgam between lyrical art and the music born in Crete. From Mikis Theodorakis and the traditional lyra musicians, from Byzantine songs and opera excerpts to musical theatre performances for children, our operatic Karagiozis, operetta productions, and the documentary on Maria Callas, the presence of the Greek National Opera in Crete aims to present the art of music in all its forms — without limits and without stereotypes.

I would like to thank the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for its encouragement and decisive support of our touring program. I also warmly thank Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni for her contribution and support toward every new initiative implemented by the Greek National Opera, as well as the Regional Governor, the Mayors, and all the institutions of Crete who invited us and embraced our organization so warmly. Special thanks also to CrediaBank and ANEK Lines for supporting this program.”
